DHEA Sulfate Blood Test

* This is not a home test kit. You will need to visit a local lab for testing.

Also Known As

Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate, DHEA, DHEA Blood Test, DHEA-S, DHEA-SO4

The Purpose of a DHEA Test

This test helps evaluate the function of the adrenal glands, which are located on top of each kidney. The adrenals produce hormones such as DHEA to help regulate metabolism, immune system activity, blood pressure, and other essential functions in the body. Men and women also produce DHEA in the testes and ovaries, respectively. The DHEA-S test can detect adrenal tumors or cancers, explore the possibility of sex organ disorders, and help determine the cause of more masculine physical traits in women, such as a deeper voice and excessive amounts of hair on the body or face.

High levels of DHEA-S may indicate congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal cancer, or Cushing syndrome. Low levels of DHEA-S could point to Addison’s disease or adrenal hypoplasia; aging can also be a factor. However, further hormone testing is required to diagnose the cause of a hormone imbalance.

What Does the DHEA-S Blood Test Measure?

Use this test to learn how much DHEA your body produces.

Who Should Take a DHEA Sulfate Test?

Women may want to take a DHEA blood test if they have physical traits traditionally associated with men. In addition to the deeper voice and too much facial and body hair (a.k.a. hirsutism), these signs can include acne, the absence of menstruation, or infertility. DHEA testing may also be advised if women suffer symptoms associated with low levels, including dizziness, nausea/vomiting, a craving for salt, and weight loss.

DHEA Lab Test Preparation

No special preparation is required before taking a DHEA-S blood test.
