Description

Use:
This test is used as a starting point for investigating excessive bleeding and clotting disorders.  It is also used to monitor heparin anticoagulant therapy and to distinguish if the right doses of heparin are being used. Also, this test is also used before surgeries to asses risk of excessive bleeding.

The aPTT test measures how well your body's blood clotting process is working. Each factor in the clotting process must be working properly and be present in the right amount.  If there is not enough of one or more factors, or if the factors are not working properly, excessive bleeding or clotting may occur.

Recommended For:
Monitoring treatment with heparin; Diagnosing coagulation factor deficiency; Assessing severity of liver disease.

Special Notes:
Blood specimen to be collected 1 hour before next heparin dose if treatment is ongoing. Specimen to be collected from arm not having heparin lock/catheter.
