      Kidney

Your kidneys are a pair of organs, each about 4-5 inches long, located in the back of your abdomen. Their main responsibility is to filter your blood, removing waste and excess fluid and controlling the balance of electrolytes. Your kidneys create urine as it filters your blood. You can find out if your kidneys are in good shape through a simple blood or urine test.

There are many conditions that affect the kidney and its ability to function properly. Bacteria from an untreated bladder infection may infect the kidney, causing symptoms such as back pain and fever. This is called Phyelonepritis. If you have an overactive immune system, your kidney could become inflamed or damaged and can even result in kidney failure. There is acute renal failure and chronic renal failure. Acute is caused by dehydration, a urinary tract blockage or kidney damage and may be reversible. Chronic is not reversible, resulting in a permanent partial loss of kidney function. This may be caused by high blood pressure or diabetes. There is also kidney cancer which is usually caused by smoking.

Personalabs offers both blood and urine tests to evaluate kidney function. Kidney blood tests may include a Serum Creatinine and Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), which is offered singularly and is also included in the Renal Function Panel. Kidney urine tests can tell you how quickly your body is removing wastes and whether your kidneys are leaking abnormal protein amounts. Some urine tests available through Personalabs are creatinine clearance and Microalbuminuria, as well as a complete urinalysis.

It is important to get tested in order to detect abnormalities and evaluate kidney function and possible damage. Find out the condition of your kidneys today!
