    Cancer Screening

Did you know that cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the United States? According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 1,658,370 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and 589,430 of those will die from the disease.

Cancer is a disease where growth of abnormal cells occur, resulting in the destruction of body tissue. There are more than 100 types of cancer in existence today. Some of the most common types include breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, bladder cancer, skin cancer, thyroid cancer, kidney cancer, leukemia, and pancreatic cancer.

Symptoms differ depending on the type of cancer present. These include changes in the skin (mole or sore), changes in the breast (size and shape), a lump or under the skin, chronic cough that doesn’t subside, difficulty eating, unidentified weight gain or loss, abdominal pain, sweating, abnormal bleeding or discharge (vaginal, rectal, stool) and extreme fatigue.

Doctors often use laboratory tests to help diagnose cancer. These tests include both blood and urine samples and can show your doctor what is going on inside of your body.

The blood tests normally ordered are a Complete Blood Count (CBC), blood protein testing, and tumor marker testing- this includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test for prostate cancer, a cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) test for ovarian cancer, calcitonin for medullary thyroid cancer and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for liver cancer.

Let Personalabs provide you with the laboratory testing your doctor requires to check if you are at risk for cancer. Customer service representatives are standing by to assist you. Contact us today!
